How can the radio possibly help my aching lower back?
If you are suffering from facet joint pain, one of the pain management options listed in our last post was Lumbar Radio Frequency Neurotomy, also known as rhizotomy. This minimally-invasive procedure reduces or eliminates pain associated with damaged facet joints by disrupting the medial branch nerves that carry the pain signals.
Local anesthetic is administered
A needle-like tube known as a cannula is inserted near the irritated medial branch nerves
An X-ray guides the doctor to the proper positioning of the cannula
A radiofrequency electrode is inserted through the cannula
The electrode heats and cauterizes the nerve thus blocking pain signals from reaching the brain
Following the procedure, the patient may have increased pain for the first week; however, pain relief usually comes within the month. This procedure has lasting effects that often last longer than those produced through a steroid block.
If you, or a loved one, is suffering from chronic pain that represents itself as facet joint pain, give us a call and we’ll provide you with the step-by-step process of scheduling an appointment with Dr. Lipson.
